OTC Medications That Are Dangerous for Dogs—What to Avoid
Some meds that help humans feel better can be toxic—even fatal—to dogs. Here’s a list of common OTC meds to never give your dog without veterinary supervision.
1. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
Extremely toxic. Can cause kidney failure and gastrointestinal ulcers.
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Even small amounts can damage a dog’s liver and red blood cells.
3. Aspirin
Sometimes used under vet supervision, but can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding.
4. Decongestants (like pseudoephedrine)
Found in cold meds—these are highly toxic to dogs.
5. Pepto-Bismol
Contains salicylates which can harm the GI tract and cause bleeding.
Never assume a safe-for-you med is safe for your dog. When in doubt, call your vet.
